NO SYSTEM: UNSEEN VOL 1
A new photo zine by artist Vinca Petersen offers a rare opportunity to explore unseen photographs from No System, a 10-year journey around Europe putting on illegal free raves and festivals with Techno Travellers in the 1990’s. Focusing on the untold story of rave culture: the relative and communal gestures that went on behind the scenes that cultivated a sense of unity, interdependence and belonging within the group. Many people came to rave for hedonism but stayed for the shared mission: to imagine a new blueprint for living.
Surviving together on the road required new ideas around communal living, from the physical side of life is amplified by living on the road; getting water, fixing engines, cooking, are all more difficult when you have ‘no fixed abode’ to making money, protesting and taking care of each other.
“It was a space where everyone was welcome and equal. There was a sense of extended family, and being part of it was healing. It seemed to be something everyone was missing.”
Along with her collaborator, Gem Fletcher, Vinca Petersen revisited her archive in order to make this zine and offer the first untold story from this period of her life.
This new zine coincides with images from NO SYSTEM being displayed in one of Petersen’s signature multi-image constellations as part of Edward Enninful’s exhibition, The 90s: Art and Fashion, which opens at Tate Modern this October.
